Methodology
Lifetime cost calculator
We sum the typical line items a dog owner faces — acquisition, setup, food, routine vet care, grooming, boarding, insurance, training, miscellaneous gear — and project them across the breed's expected lifespan midpoint. Vet costs are multiplied by a state cost-of-living adjustment derived from publicly reported veterinary salary indices and BLS regional cost data.
Daily calorie calculator
We use the standard veterinary formula:
- RER (Resting Energy Requirement) = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75
- DER (Daily Energy Requirement) = RER × activity factor
Activity factors are taken from WSAVA and AAHA published references. Intact adults receive a 10% upward adjustment; weight-loss plans use a 1.0× factor against ideal weight.
Insurance premium estimator
The model is: industry base monthly premium × breed risk tier × age multiplier × state cost factor × plan tier. The base is taken from the 2024–2025 NAPHIA industry report (national average mid-tier standard plan on a 2-year-old adult dog). Breed risk tiers reflect known genetic predispositions and claim-frequency data from public carrier filings.
What this isn't
These are estimates designed to inform planning, not to replace a quote, a vet's professional opinion, or a financial advisor. Real insurance pricing depends on deductible, reimbursement percentage, annual coverage limit, and pre-existing conditions in ways our simple model can't fully capture.
